3 Tips For Protecting Braces During Summer Sports

Summer sports are a great way for kids and teens to stay active, but braces need some extra protection during practices and games. A direct hit to the mouth can damage brackets or wires and cause unnecessary discomfort.

With a few simple precautions, your child can keep playing while protecting their orthodontic treatment.

1. Wear A Mouthguard

A properly fitted mouthguard is one of the best ways to protect teeth and braces during sports. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends wearing a mouthguard for sports where there is a risk of contact or injury.

For athletes with braces, ask your orthodontic team which type of mouthguard is appropriate. A mouthguard designed to accommodate braces can provide protection without interfering with the orthodontic appliances.

2. Keep Hard And Sticky Snacks Away

Summer tournaments and practices often come with quick snacks. Hard or sticky foods can damage brackets or wires, so choose braces-friendly options instead.

Pack softer choices such as:

  • Yogurt
  • Soft fruit
  • Cheese
  • Sandwiches
  • Smooth snacks

Your orthodontic team can provide a complete list of foods to avoid during treatment.

3. Check Your Braces After Games

Take a moment after practices and games to make sure everything feels normal. If a bracket feels loose, a wire is poking, or something seems out of place, let your orthodontic team know.

Do not try to bend or cut a wire yourself. A loose bracket or irritating wire may need attention before your next scheduled appointment.

Keep Your Smile On Track This Summer

Braces should not keep your child from enjoying their favorite summer activities. With the right mouthguard, smart food choices, and attention to any orthodontic problems, your child can stay active while protecting their treatment.

Schedule an appointment if your child experiences damage to their braces or needs help keeping their orthodontic treatment on track.
